Avery began his career as a multimedia designer in San Francisco. He built his design skills crafting brands and interactive experiences for new internet businesses in both consumer and B2B markets. In 2001 Avery joined Stone Yamashita Partners (SY Partners) where he produced and designed immersive environments, print collateral, video, presentations, as well as educational and interactive media. In 2004 Avery devoted himself to his design consultancy full-time while pursuing his MFA in Photography and Sculpture at Mills College.

During his MFA in art practice, Avery continued his consultancy as a creative professional and later combined the disciplines as he held an Assistant Professorship of art and design at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO). During his time at UNO his research focused primarily on typeface design and professional practice while he built a new concentration in graphic design.

In 2015 Avery left Omaha to pursue his passion for professional practice, and relocated to Chicago with his husband Rob. Over the course of his career he has worked for Levi’s Strauss & Co., Netflix, Facebook, HP, PWC Consulting, Nike, Gap Inc., eBay, CocaCola, Armani Exchange, and Patron Spirits. He holds a BAIA in Multimedia from San Francisco State University and an MFA in Art from Mills College.
